I just got done watching Ernest Goes To Camp and I came to one conclusion. That is that comedy movies could really use Ernest or another Ernest like character these days. The one thing I noticed about Ernest tonight is he very rarely has a selfish moment if any. He is always trying to do good no matter how small his role is (and it often is small in the form of a summer camp repairman, bank janitor, garbage man, etc.). While he is easily duped by others for their own selfish means, if any wrong comes from it, he will stop at nothing to set things right. Does anyone else see this?
To me, the opposite of Ernest has to be any recent Adam Sandler "character". With "Just Go With It" it's clear that he uses the people around him for his own selfish desires. The worst thing is that the character suffers really no real form of punishment in the end. Lie and tell a thousand lies to cover that first lie, and you'll be rewarded.
I don't expect characters of perfect morals to be the protagonists of every comedy movie but I think it would be nice to see characters that are at least more toward the middle ground of the spectrum. Maybe Ace Ventura would be an example of that. What does everyone else think of this?
